February Prayer & Fasting Day 8

Jesus said in John 10:27, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”

Welcome to day eight of our 21 days of prayer and fasting here at Perth Hills Church.

Well done getting through the first week. Today’s devotional is about learning to listen.

One thing fasting and prayer does as we slow down is give us ears to hear.

You can be driving through the Perth Hills and suddenly your radio signal cuts out. The station hasn’t stopped broadcasting — they’re still sending the signal — but something has changed with your alignment and positioning.

It’s similar in our relationship with God. His voice hasn’t changed, but sometimes our attentiveness has. Fasting and prayer helps bring us back into alignment so we can hear Him clearly. It quiets the noise of life.

Fasting helps you hear what you need for your next step, because man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.

As a shearing pastor, I love the picture of sheep in John 10. In biblical times, multiple flocks could gather at the same watering place. But when the shepherd called, only the sheep that recognised his voice followed him.

Fasting and prayer is not dieting or simply pushing away the plate — it’s drawing near to God and His Word so you become familiar with the voice of the Shepherd.

Jesus is our Good Shepherd. He leads us into green pastures and beside still waters. Even when we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, we do not need to fear, because He is with us. His rod and His staff comfort us, and He never leaves or forsakes us.

Can you hear the Shepherd today?

God bless you.
